The legend of Xtabay tells of a woman who lived in a village in the Yucatán Peninsula. Her name was Xtabay, but some called her Xkeban (which means "one who practices illicit love"). People said Xtabay was gifted with the power of seduction but sick with lust which caused her to give her favors to every man who asked her. However, Xtabay had a great heart. She kindly helped the poor, sick, homeless, & also the animals abandoned for being considered useless. She did this by giving up the jewelry & fine clothes she got from her lovers. Xtabay was not a haughty woman, nor did she insult other villagers. She humbly received the humiliations from the people of her village. One day, Xtabay was not seen anymore. Days passed & a fine delicate perfume sweeter than any before was smelled all over the village. People found it came from the house of Xtabay who unbeknownst to them had died there, alone. Many argued it wasn't possible, that the perfume couldn't be that of such a vile and corrupt body; nothing but decay and stench could come out of her. They argued that it had to be bad spirits of seduction still trying to tempt men. A few people buried Xtabay, feeling pity for her. The next day, her grave was covered with beautiful flowers of a delicate perfume that no one planted. The flowers mysteriously growing on Xtabay's grave were named Xtabentún....
